Sukamade …

Sukamade beach is about 97 km to southwest of Banyuwangi. It is natural and quiet, beautiful place. Dutch discovered it in 1927. The 1200 hectare estate is an active plantation that produces rubber, coffee and cacao. Sukamade is the east Java Natural Resource Conservation which is in charge of the turtle’s perpetuation. A night adventure tour to Sukamade is an unforgettable trip. You will be guided by a natural resource to find sea turtles come to a shore to lay eggs. You can see a female turtle lays more than one hundred eggs on the sandy beach. The female turtles usually start landing at 7:30 PM and return to the sea at 12:00PM.

The ways to Sukamade is worth exploring. Along the way to visit this place the visitors can stop at the beautiful place of Rajegwesi, Teluk Hijau a fantastic green bay with its beautiful cliff around. A dawn excursion to see animals grassing on the savannah is also impressing. They are virgin places you must know in the eastern tip of Java, banyuwangi, Indonesia.

Mojopahit ancient temples

If you are bored with a big city activity…  alright then, what if we take you here to see the ancient temples and a huge sleeping Budha statue. What for? because of this story …

Eastern Javanesse history usually devided into three dynasti periods. The first was the period when the kings of Kadiri ruled over Java(10th-1222AD) they ware succeeded by the dynasty of Singasari(1222-1293AD), which in turn was replaced by the kings of Majapahit(1293-early 16th century).

Majapahit’s Power reached its summit under the rule of King Hayam Wuruk. Gajah Mada was again prime minister until his death in 1365 AD. After Hayam Wuruk died in 1389AD, the country was split up by fraternal conflicts. Hayam Wuruk had been succeeded by the crown princess Kusumawardhanni, who had married with a relative, Prince Wikrawardhana.

Trowulan site is supposed to be the center of Majapahit Kingdom years ago that has 11km x 9km width. This site covers Mojokerto and Jombang regency region. In this region, there are a lot of archeological heritage for example, temple (Bajangratu, Gentong, Wringinlawang, etc), pool(Segaran pool, tikus), gateaway, foundation of building, and artifact like statue, relief, some equipment of ceremony, and household.

Ijen Crater

Naik naik ke puncak gunung ….

Tinggi tinggi sekali …

kiri kanan … kulihat saja…

banyak pohon cemara …

kiri kanan … kulihat saja… banyak pohon cemara

(it’s one of the most famous Indonesian song which is always sound familiar for the kids who are ready for a mountain adventure)

And so lovely people, we present you … one of the beautiful place in East Java …. which is the widest crater in Indonesia with 5Ha area on the height of 2800m above the sea level …. Kawah Ijen (Ijen Crater)

The Crater .... Courtesy of Ayudi EP

Ijen Crater is the biggest crater lake in Java. The sulfur crater lake lies between a natural dams of deeply etched rock. It is 200 meters deep and contains about 36million cubic meters of steaming acid water, shrouded in a smelling swirling sulfur cloud. Inside the crater the different color and size of stones are found. Indeed the crater of Ijen is beautiful garden of stone as well.

line up sulfurs ready to be picked up ... Courtesy of Maya Sari

The view of sulfur miners who climb and go down to the crater is also amazing. A man puts about 10 kg of yellowish stone in to his basket, before he descends the mountain slope to sell his load, carrying the same basket, going in the same direction, digging the same mineral. It is the natural picture that can be seen everyday.

a sulfur miner can put about 65kg to 95 kg of yellowish stone in to his basket and carry it on his shoulder, before he walk down the mountain slope to sell his load with the price of 600 rupiah per kilogram. a very low price for such a very heavy weight duty. he can put on his shoulder the basket full of yellowish stone called sulfur trice a day. Courtesy of Maya Sari

Ijen Plateau lies in the centre of Ijen-Merapi Malang Reserve, which extends over much of the mountainous region directly west of Banyuwangi and borders on the Baluran National Park in the northeast. As at Mt. Bromo, the caldera is best viewed from the air. Fortunately, almost all commercial flights operating between Denpasar – Surabaya, Yogyakarta or Jakarta usually fly, if not directly over, then close by Ijen plateau, where the seemingly luminous blue/green crater lake forms an unmistakable landmark. It is beautiful scenery and located about 32 km to the north west of Banyuwangi.

The principal attraction at Ijen is the large Crater Lake that has much sulfur, which lies hidden between sheer walls of deeply furrowed rock at more than 200 meters. The Ijen crater itself lies at approximately 2,300 meters above sea level. It forms a twin volcano with the now extinct Mount Merapi. The enormous Crater Lake, which is 200 meters deep and covers an area of more than meters, a million square meters, contains about 36 million cubic meters of steaming, acid water.

Ijen crater shows a special type of volcanic feature common to Indonesia, about 1 kilometer in diameter and 175 meters deep. The floor is covered completely by a warm lake, milky blue green in colours held back by a dam built many years ago by the Dutch, in order to keep the hot, mineral laden water from raining the crop lands below.

The crater can be reached from either the east or the west by any kinds of vehicles, but the second part of the trip covers distance 3 km on foot (jungle track). However, the latter is more popular approach, since the climb from the road’s end to the edge of the lake is only one and a half hours. And a walk around the lake takes a full day.

The temperature drops at night, near the crater rim it can fall to about 5° Celsius. The road ends at Jampit, where very basic shelter is available. It is also possible to sleep in the old vulcanology station further up the hill, now used by sulfur collectors, but permission must be obtained in advance.

The sulfur is transported entirely on foot. In the past, horses were used but they were found to be less practical on the hazardous terrain. Today, the mine yields nine to twelve tons of sulfur per day.

the fact about sulfur miners, they are nice and polite greeting the visitors while they are walking and carring those heavy weight sulfurs and even willing to stop for a while just to be taken pictures by visitors. ...Courtesy of Maya Sari

very hard working sulfur miner, see his shoulder so thick and muscled to hold 65 to 95kg of sulfur stones..Courtesy of Maya Sari

next to weighing point, sulfur miner can put down the sulfur stones, takes rest and has his breakfast before continue walk down the mountain to the warehouse and gets his wages....Courtesy of Maya Sari

Men carry individual loads of up to 70 kg, often barefooted, up to the rim of crater and then 17 km down the mountainside to a factory near Banyuwangi. The porters are paid by weight. The most important advice if you are traveling to Ijen is: “If you lose your way, just look out for the sulfur trail”. The meaning was clear, since a continuous flow of two ways traffic, carrying the sulfur down the mountainside from the lake and trudging up again to re-load, had left a yellow trail on the well-worn path. The best time for seeing Ijen Crater is at 8 to 9 am.

And voila…. this is the hidden Lagoon 🙂

If you like a quiet place, where no one is around, isolated from the outside world, Sempu Island in Indonesia is the right place for you.

The long journey to reach the lagoon in the heart of the island pays off after you see the magnificent white sand and blue water. The population is zero, with no electricity and no drinkable water, except one hidden oasis in the deep jungle. With the landscape of Hindian Ocean’s view …

Mt Bromo Erupting

Courtesy of Jon Mclean

Mount Bromo in East Java is one of the most recognisable volcanoes in Indonesia, and it’s only a few hours from Surabaya by car. The view from the village of Cemoro Lawang is legendary. The sweeping vista takes in the epic Sea of Sand, the smoking crater of Bromo itself, Mt Batok and the highest peak in Java, Gunung Semeru in the distance.

Bromo has been in a state of continual eruption since November 2010. Even though it is not possible to go to the crater rim at this time, visitors are still able to go to Cemoro Lawang and view the volcano from a distance of 3 kilometres. Trust us! At the moment, this is close enough. You can hear the roar of the volcano and frequent booms and explosions as huge rocks are spat out of the crater. Smoke and gas pour out into the sky, while the ground trembles beneath your feet.

But nowadays The situation is subject to rapid change – please contact us for further advice.

Depending on time, tours can be arranged to suit you. It is possible to see Bromo in a day, but for those with more time,  We can arrange an extended tour of the area. It’s possible to visit waterfalls, viewpoints, crater lakes and hot springs. You can also go rafting on the Pekalen river, near Probolinggo.

Bull Racing in Madura

Courtesy of Jon Mclean

For many travelers passing through East Java, Madura has remained a somewhat overlooked corner. This fascinating island is, in its own way, as culturally unique and fascinating as Bali. Now, thanks to the construction of the Suramadu Bridge, getting to Madura from Surabaya is easier than ever before.

Madura is perhaps most famous for the annual bull races, which are held between September and October each year (depending on the date of Id il-Fitri). Villages compete to find the best bulls of the season by racing bulls in a knockout series of exhilarating one-on-one races, ridden by jockeys who are usually under the age of 12. It’s a unique spectacle, and something that should not be missed if you are in the area at the right time.

Madura has many other sights to offer the adventurous traveller. Batik workshops near the capital Sumenep, fishing villages, and ancient mosques and graveyards of kings. Often, the most unexpected things happen when you least expect them. From impromptu village festivals, to a Sunday afternoon cock fight. Check out the gallery for some pictures.

We can organise a tour at a reasonable price, depending on your needs and wants.
